Deduplicating data with content-defined chunking

Andrew gave a talk on deduplicating data with content-defined chunking in Go. The approach breaks data into chunks at boundaries chosen from the content itself, so identical chunks can be stored once and referenced thereafter instead of copied repeatedly. Because the boundaries depend on the data rather than a fixed size, insertions and edits don't shift every later boundary — which is what makes content-defined chunking more robust for deduplication than fixed-size blocks.

Key points:

  • Deduplication stores repeated data once and references it thereafter.
  • Content-defined chunking picks chunk boundaries from the data itself.
  • Variable boundaries survive insertions and edits better than fixed-size chunks.
  • The presentation and a video recording are linked below.
